Opportunity Green Business Conference 2011 Speakers
Peter Shumlin @VTGovernor
State of Vermont
Peter Shumlin (55, Dem) was elected Governor of Vermont in 2010 and is one of the nation’s leading supporters of renewable energy and the green economy. His office has addressed climate change with real, sustainable solutions. Governor Shumlin helped pass a key economic development bill with important green provisions, including legislating the Entrepreneurs’ Seed Capital Fund and setting more predictable requirements to allow wind and hydro projects to succeed. He also provided the momentum behind the Vermont Senate vote to retire the dirty and dangerous Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.
In education, he recently created a funding mechanism to bring high school students interested in careers in math, engineering and computer science related to sustainable energy to the UVM/GIV Engineering Institute.
In (2010), Vermont became the first state in the country to pass “standard offer” legislation that sets standard offer rates for renewable energy projects in Vermont. The legislation has seen great success, with a record number of renewable energy generation projects being proposed and funded since its passage. He has also recently taken steps towards (to form) a regional collaboration of New England states and eastern Canadian provinces to develop more complete renewable energy portfolio standards and to strengthen the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
In July 2011 the governor wrote to President Obama and California Governor Jerry Brown to voice his support for a single, national emission standard for passenger vehicles and light trucks. California and the federal government are in negotiations to harmonize their standards into a single national standard. “I care about this issue for Vermonters, but also for all Americans. Our nation’s dependence on oil for transportation continues to pose a serious threat to our economy, security, public health and environment,” Governor Shumlin wrote. Vermont is one of thirteen states and the District of Columbia which have voluntarily adopted California's vehicle emissions standards. This is a wonderful example of how successful green leadership at the state level affects us all.
We are proud to honor Governor Peter Shumlin with this prestigious award. We look forward to hearing him speak on the issues that motivate him to make changes for a cleaner, greener nation at this year’s Opportunity Green conference!
